Ian Parsons and Martin Lee are currently exploring the way that microtextures of minerals, particularly feldspars, affect reactions during weathering and soil formation, and facilitate interactions of bacteria and plants with mineral surfaces. The complex surfaces that develop on mineral grains during dissolution may have important catalytic roles for synthesis of the complex molecules necessary for life. Microscopic etch-tubes provide possible containers for the sequences of reactions which led to the earliest cells.
